10 Must-Haves for Your Newborn Baby in the UK - A Mum's Guide
This might seem obvious, but stock up on nappies and wipes. You'll go through these faster than you can imagine. With my babies, I started with at least one pack of size 0 nappies, which was a lifesaver as both my little ones were just over six pounds at birth, size 1 nappies were a bit too big for the first week or so then 3 big packs of size 1's and 2 packs of size 2. Which kept me going for a while. We also chose nappies and wipes suitable for sensitive skin to avoid irritation. For the first 6 weeks, we used Cotton Wool and water instead of wipes, which helped us avoid nappy rash entirely. Additionally, having a tube of Bepanthen on hand for any sudden skin issues is always a wise idea. This proactive approach ensured smooth and rash-free skin for both of my babies.
2. SwaddlesOne of the first things I learned as a new mum is that newborns love to be swaddled. Swaddles mimic the snugness of the womb, helping your baby feel secure and sleep better. The swaddles I make are made from a soft, breathable blend of Bamboo and Organic Cotton, ensuring your baby is cosy but not too warm. I remember those early days when swaddling was a lifesaver during those unsettled moments.
A baby carrier is a game-changer for keeping your baby close while keeping your hands free. Whether you're doing chores around the house or going for a walk, a good carrier provides comfort for both you and your baby. Before committing to a large purchase, consider visiting a local sling library. They allow you to test out different slings until you find the perfect one for you and your baby, and they show you how to safely sling your baby. I often used mine to soothe my little one while still being able to sew for my business.
4. Footed RompersFooted Rompers are an absolute must have for any newborn. They are practical, keep your baby warm, and eliminate the need for separate socks that they seem to have magic powers to get off and lose themselves. I have a beautiful range of adorable gender neutral Footed Rompers that are both stylish and comfortable. I can't count the number of times I appreciated not having to worry about my baby's feet getting cold.
5. A Comfortable Nursing PillowBreastfeeding can be challenging, especially at first. A good nursing pillow supports your baby and helps you maintain a comfortable position, making feeding tine a bit easier. I cherished my nursing pillow during those cluster feeding sessions!
6. Dribble BibsBabies are dribble machines, especially when teething begins. Dribble Bibs are not just cute but functional, keeping your baby's clothes dry and saving you from constant outfit changes. Our Dribble Bibs come in various designs to match outfits, and have 3 different poppers which creates adjustable sizing, making them last longer.
7. A Reliable Baby MonitorPeace of mind is invaluable. A reliable baby monitor helps you keep an eye (and ear) on your baby when you're not in the same room. It allowed me to rest a bit easier knowing I could always check in on my little one without stopping what I was doing.
8. Baby Bath EssentialsBath time can be a beautiful bonding experience. Having the right baby bath essentials can make this daily routine enjoyable for both you and your bundle of joy. Here's what I found indispensable:
- Gentle Baby Wash: Choose a mild, tear-free formula to keep your baby's skin soft and irritation-free. I liked a lavender scented one for before bed baths.
- Soft Washcloths: These are perfect for gently cleaning your baby's delicate skin and something I forgot about with my first baby.
- Baby Bath Seat: A bath seat provides support and safety, making it easier to bathe your newborn. Don't go spending a fortune on one though as they will out grow it before you know it.
- Hooded Towels: These keep you baby warm and cosy after bath time, preventing them from getting cold.
A white noise machine can be a lifesaver for sleep-deprived parents. Newborns are used to the constant sound of the womb, and white noise can mimic that environment, helping them to sleep better and longer. I found that using a white noise machine created a soothing sleep environment, which meant more rest for both my baby and me but please learn from my mistake: don't switch it off whilst they are sleeping. Babies and toddlers like everything to be exactly the same as it was when they went to sleep. If it isn't, and they stir during the night, they are likely going to wake up startled.
10. Knotted HatsNewborns lose a lot of heat through their heads, so keeping them warm is crucial. Knotted Hats are perfect for this, providing warmth without being too tight. Our collection of knotted hats combines comfort and cuteness, ensuring your baby is cosy and photo-ready.
The Temptation to Overbuy
It's incredibly easy to get carried away with your first baby. I remember my excitement turning into a bit of a shopping frenzy, filling the nursery with things we rarely used. The truth is, babies don't need much to be happy and healthy. Stick to the essentials and avoid overbuying. Focus on items that will genuinely make your life easier and your baby more comfortable.
Embracing the Journey into Motherhood
Embarking on the journey into motherhood is an exciting and transformative experience. Every kick, every ultrasound, and eventually, every coo and cry, brings a wave of emotions that make it all worthwhile. Cherish these moments, trust your instincts, and remember that it's okay to feel overwhelmed. You're not alone, and with each passing day, you'll grow more confident in your new role.
